home alone

I currently find myself in an unusual situation - home alone without Anna. She's out with a friend having a glass of wine and I am home with Daisy the dog. Daisy is growing on me, we are pals her and I. I even invited her up to sit with me and watch Austin Powers. She loved it, I could tell. There's something about being home alone that feels good - a time to reflect and take a deep breath -perhaps even realize that this is really my apartment and that I am married and have a dog! Crazy! I just brewed up some coffee and am working my way through a bar of Cadbury's milk chocolate. A list: 5 things on the East Coast which remind me of South Africa.

  1. Cadbury's chocolate
  2. Fox Sports World
  3. Fairview wine
  4. A SA flag bumper sticker on a passing car
  5. Ernie and Retief on tv

It's the little things you know. I met a couple today who have just moved out from the Bay Area (San Francisco) - Berkeley in fact. I could tell they had movers shock and were not so sure about their new town of Chapel Hill. I tried to cheer them up, but I guess they will just have to find out like I did, that this is a wonderful spot. 5 great things about Chapel Hill:

  1. It's a town not a city
  2. The University
  3. Elaines, Lantern and 411
  4. Duke Forest
  5. 2 hours to the beach, two hours to the mountains
  6. It's a blue oasis in a sea of red
  7. No religous cults, at least none I have found
  8. Southern food and hospitality

OK, that's eight. So I like the place!I have to stop myself. I think the coffees ready, so I should skedadle.

Word in my head today: scallywag. Band in my head today: Ben Folds Five - the old stuff

Keep your chin up - Ben
