Happy news. For those of you wishing I would just steal the neighbor's basil and stop pining away for it - Ben ran into the neighbor herself and struck up a conversation wherein he admired her basil. To which she responded, "Please help yourself." So I have officially been sanctioned and will begin to pilfer basil right away.
Sad news. We recently discovered that Daisy the Dog is blind in her right eye. She was born with a bit of a birth defect, and her little eye never fully developed. As the vet says "Dogs only need one eye." (yes, but wouldn't two be twice as good?) On the bright side, being half-blind has not slowed our girl down. And she has reaped our sympathy. "Poor Daisy," we say, and in response, she looks at us (with her one good eye), like: "What? What's wrong?" and goes back to chewing her bone.
Currently reading: Stone for a Pillow, by Madeleine L'Engle and must (must) start on the book for my very first book club, which kicks off next week. I do hope that this will be an anti-Oprah book club. I'm still very bitter that she co-opted East of Eden.
Currently listening to: 90.7 FM, NCCU jazz station playing Judy Wexler, which is lovely accompaniment for any morning.

Oh, dear Daisy, it just adds to her adorable quirkiness. Hooray for anti-Oprah anything! Although I did get to meet one of her nearest and dearest friends while up in NYC-Judith Jamison. She's in a bunch of the pictures of Oprah's "look at me!" Legends brunch she threw in this month's "look at me some more!" O magazine.
ha ha...look at me some more..is a very apt description. the O empire continues to groooooooow.
O! Poor Daisy. Give her a little kiss on the nose from granny!!!
Well, I too am blind in one eye (well, nearly, because 20/400 vision in my right eye does me little good), and I can tell Daisy that what you never had you don't tend to miss. My one good eye has allowed me to see lots of beauty in a half century, though.
As far as the E (estrogen surely should be capitalized)-Ranch, I believe Tim Conder should get credit for the name. What a beautiful gift you four were given and nurtured all these years. Cherish it.

I'm just glad you're finally getting some basil. I'm already imagining all the basil-themed recipes you can create. Basil pie, Basil eggnog, Basil Mac & Cheese, Basil cup noodles, and of course, Basil Gorditas. Bon Appetite!
