Last night, it was cool enough to actually wear a sweater (not just wishful thinking any longer), so of course we both put one on and went out for a glass of wine. Mondays are half price bottle of wine nights at one of our favorite restaurants, so we split a twelve dollar bottle of cotes-du-rhone. It may in fact have been our last twelve dollars. But it was well worth it. Sometimes you just need a treat. Sometimes you just need to get out of the house.
It's a slow week. For me anyway. After weeks of pushing toward deadlines, work has quieted down these days. And I don't quite know what to do with myself. Meanwhile, Ben is working day and night to complete an online portfolio for a running list of graphic design jobs. He's in the throes of a job search, which is a full-time job in itself. I was just saying to my friend, Dawn (who is in the throes of engagement) that there are transitions in life that feel like a full-time job in themselves...moving, looking for a job, planning a wedding...just to name a few. There should really be a big pot of money you can draw down from at those times - just so you feel that you are receiving some sort of compensation for the amount of sheer effort you're putting into life.
Because Ben's busy, and I'm not - I'm tasked with Daisy's morning walk. But it's a good excuse to be outside and daily gauge how much closer we are to autum. I have a friend who says he does not have a favorite season - it's the transition from season to season that he loves. It's good to feel the change from summer to fall. It's a rapid shift in North Carolina. One day you're wishing for sweaters, and the very next day, you're wearing one. But the transition, no matter how quick - is wonderful.
This morning was the kind of walk I've been looking forward to - a fall walk with Daisy the Dog. It's a perfect grey day. Daisy and I walked through tall grass, wet with last night's rain. It was just slightly cool. I let Daisy off her leash, and she chased a dozen geese back into the pond. Where they belong. When we walked back, the air was misting, and the air smelled like honey and wet earth. It smelled like fall.

Autumn! You said autumn (well, almost). Didn't know that was a word over there. Josie had a fall today but it wasn't smelly. Hit her head on the roundabout (the play-park kind, not the intersection kind) and is sporting a huge bruise. Yellows and oranges mostly. Which I suppose makes it all make sense.
Autum? I'm sorry. You must be referring to fall.
Poor Josie - the roundabout is an unfortunate rite of passage!
p.s. I don't want to alarm you, but this comment is reminiscent of your dear old Dad and his pun-ny way of saying things.

Oh dear. Oh deary deary dear ... I shall have to work harder at that.
Mmmmm, fall. Maybe I'll actually wear a sweater on my birthday this year. Hooray for Ben's job search! Hooray for autumn walks with Daisy!
Love, Lu
I like this thought, that one should receive some sort of compensation for the sheer effort one is putting into life. I identify with that these days.
And yes, we've had some hope for autumnal weather. Perhaps it will really kick in soon.
