heavy lifting

Today, we bought a gorgeous new armoire for our living room. We've been looking for an armoire to keep the television hidden away behind closed doors. And today, we finally found it. It's contemporary and unique and best of all, in our price range. Plus, it's a minor miracle when we agree on furniture.

So, after much rearranging and pushing and pulling, we managed to somehow fit this giant piece of furniture into the Element. Albeit, we did drive home with the seats pushed so far up that the steering wheel was in Ben's lap. But! We made it. With that gorgeous armoire in one piece.

Then, we attempted to (carefully) shove our brand new armoire (which I love...did I mention that already?) out of the car this evening. We weren't even being ambitious about moving the armoire, because it weighs a ton and a half. We were just trying to move it slowly inch-by-inch. Just the two of us. Even though we had four people helping us load it. We were trying to move this gigantic piece of furniture ourselves.

And that's when Ben threw his back out.

But it didn't seem to happen right away. He says "Oh. My back" but carries on trying to push this thing out of the Element. So, we take a quick break. And a few minutes later, I come inside to find him lying flat on the floor. He insists that he just needs "a few minutes," and he can still move the armoire. But I insist that he get into bed with a heating pad. It was just that when he could barely make it to a standing position, I thought it might be best that he not continue to move a heavy piece of furniture. Maybe you disagree.

Anyway, that leaves me with the Element wide open in the driveway at 8 o'clock at night with a gigantic armoire halfway-in and halfway-out. I tried very hard to move it just a few inches back into the car, so I could lock up for the evening and try again tomorrow. But I couldn't even manage that. I pushed and pushed and pushed with all my might. And...nothing. Not a single centimeter of movement. You might have laughed a little if you had seen me. So earnest. So not strong enough.

So, I called my brother. And he's on his way over to push the armoire back into the Element for the night.

We'll try again tomorrow.

this reminds me of when we moved the armoire at V street, inch by inch until we got it to the other corner...what an accomplishment. Can't wait to see pictures of the new piece of furniture!

Lu, yes...we traded in the Jeep with for a Honday element over the summer. The Jeep continued to have that mysterious "water in the rear end" so we gave it up.

DDL - I had completely forgotten about that armoire at Vermont Street! That thing was crazy heavy! We'll post photos.

You two are so funny. I laughed and laughed at you both. Ben would say that's typical of his mom to have no sympathy about his back going out!
