If I hurry, I can still get today's entry in before the clock strikes twelve. To celebrate Ben's birthday, we hosted a house full of friends for chili. BYOB. Bring your own bowl (and beer). It was a lot of fun, and it just goes to show that you don't have to be schmancy to have a nice dinner party. We put two huge pots of chili on the stove, and that was about it.
On the side, we had cornbread, guacamole, cheese, sour cream and fritos. The fritos disappeared almost instantaneously. Note: Always buy more fritos than you think you'll need.
But very importantly, we ended the evening with birthday cake. 8 eggs, 5 cups of flour and 2 pounds of carrots later, we had a significant carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Ben didn't want us to put candles on the cake and sing. Which is precisely why we did just that. We even clapped at the end to make it extra special. He feigned mild embarrassment.
But I have a feeling - he loved every second.

Happy Birthday Ben!!! Sounds like a great celebration, right up your alley. And I can just see your sheepish, embarassed face as your wife did exactly what you didn't want :)
What a great birthday celebration! Cheers Ben!
So sorry we missed it. But the beach....We'll have our own celebration for you Tues. Cheers and very happy pre-birthday.
Enjoy your three days of birthday celebrations, Ben. The chili party must have been fun
