so...a needle pulling thread

In a burst of energy and inspiration, I decided to spend my Sunday afternoon glamming up the guest room - seeing as we have guests coming this weekend, and the room has been in various states of Shambles since we moved in. I don't blame my Mother for the way my Sunday afternoon went, but she was the one who convinced me I was capable of sewing curtains and pillows. So, I located the sewing machine in our garage and lugged it upstairs for an afternoon of cheerful sewing. How crafty, you exclaim, clearly impressed with my sewing talent - and you would be wrong.

I slaved over that machine, cursed it, kicked it, and nearly cried over it - and this was just in the process of trying to thread it. Finally, I called my Mother (for the third time that morning) and she acquiesed to come over and rescue me. (Bonus - she brought lunch!)

After a supplemental sewing lesson from my Mother, I was off and running (more like cramped and grumpy). I labored over the curtains for the better part of the afternoon, and sigh of relief, finally finished - only to discover that I had sewn the wrong edge of the curtain.

Ben, sensing a breakdown, kindly pulled out my stitches, and I started over. Upon completion: lovely, let's hang these and see what they look like! Only to discover that one panel was THREE INCHES longer than the other. I fixed them, and we finally called it a day. I have obviously over-estimated my crafty-ness.

In other news, Ben is allergic to Gyros - after having one for lunch on Saturday, his lip swelled up, and he broke out in hives. Seriously. I've never seen anything like it.

Does this mean that if I post a comment I get a free pic of a gorgeous young lady?
Most of my carpentry and other DIY achievements result in experiences like your curtain-making, to the point that in my old age I expect that to happen, which is not good for the soul. So, at an early age try to find someone close and cuddly who has the appropriate talents. As it happens, Ben has a brother and a paternal grandfather who excell at things like sewing curtains, so maybe he has been hiding his thimble under his bushel. It sounds as though he's got the same kind of lips as the same brother, so therefore.

Anna, next time someone feeds Ben one of those be sure to have a camera handy. Now you know it's not fatal you're free to recognise its excellent comedy value.

Sewing curtains is a really awful job, and then to have things go wrong as well! O dear. At least you got them finished and didn't fling them into a corner of the cupboard never to look at thewm again.

Ben, don't eat another of those, because when Jamie did his mouth swelled up so that he couldn't even open it to drink water

What's in gyro's that is so dangerous? Poor Ben, but the image is very entertaining. I've had similar experiences behind my sewing machine, so I can totally relate. It's not as easy as some make you think. I am enchanted by Ben's aid and envious of the aid you got from your mom. I bet the curtains are awesome!

Allergic reactions are NOT funny. Thank you. In fact, they're even worse when everybody knows about them. Thanks to my dear wife for being so helpful.
